"...this program teaches children, among other things, to think for themselves, speak-up for themselves, communicate effectively, and know when to ask for help." Deborah Daro, Ph.D., Director, National Center on Child Abuse Prevention Research, Review appearing in Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal, 16:1

How the Safe Child Program Works

The Safe Child Program is conducted in three phases on a yearly basis.

PHASE 1 - PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF INCLUDES:

Introduction to the Program;

Overview of the problems of child abuse;

Dynamics of child abuse;

Specific techniques for teaching classroom program;

Recognizing and reporting abuse; and

Implementation information.

The Implementation Guide and Resource Manual provide materials, information and training techniques to effectively address the questions and concerns of teachers, counselors and others as they prepare to implement the Program.

PHASE 2 - PARENT SEMINAR INCLUDES:

Introduction to the Program;

Overview of the problems of child abuse;

Specific techniques taught to their children;

Recognizing and reporting abuse; and

Treatment and resources for help.

The Implementation Guide and Resource Manual provide outlines and background materials for the parent seminar. The Teacher/Parent Videotape is provided to illustrate for parents the concepts and children's training at both the preschool and K-3 level.

PHASE 3 - CHILDREN'S PROGRAM:

Each day's lesson begins with a videotape. The classroom children, learn from the children in the videotape, the new concepts for the day.

The accompanying Teacher's Manual provides a script for the teacher including role-play, discussion, classroom activities and take-home materials. This follows the videotape each day of the Program.

Role-playing is used by the classroom teacher to turn the concepts into skills for each child. As the children practice the techniques, they develop mastery. This is important. Without the role-play, the prevention concepts remain just that -- concepts. The real key to the Program is that the videotape presentation merges with the role-play and classroom activities, which enables the children to master the skills -- to learn them "in their muscles."

Over a ten day period in preschool and kindergarten and over five days each in grades one, two and three the children are sequentially and developmentally introduced to a range of prevention tools and life skills which enable them to use the prevention techniques.
