  Prevention of Emotional Abuse

Prevention of emotional abuse is addressed in the Safe Child Program in kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 3.

It begins by discussing words that hurt. In a context of recognizing that all grown-ups have problems and that sometimes those problems affect kids, the children learn:

  • that it's not all right for someone to make you feel badly about yourself and to say things that hurt you on a consistent basis;
  • you need to tell someone if this is happening to you;
  • and who to tell and how to tell.

Children also learn that adults can get help for their problems and that it is all right to ask for help for your family as well as yourself.

"Involving parents, teachers and children, The Safe Child Program not only prevents child abuse, it is an effective tool for building self-esteem and life skills." Gail Revis, Director of Guidance and Counseling, Houston Independent School District
